Myanmar is situated in the southeast of Asia. The neighboring countries are Bangladesh and India in its northwest, China in its northeast, Laos in the east and Thailand in its east and southeast.
It has a total area of 676577 square kilometers (261228 sq mi). It is made up of seven states and seven divisions. The seven states represent the areas of seven main ethnic races which are Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakkhine and Shan.
Shan state is the largest in the 14 administrative state and divisions of Myanmar. It has almost a quarter of the total country area. It is divided into three sub-states: Shan (South), Shan (North) and Shan (East). There are also three significant cities in Shan State. Taunggyi, Lashio and Kengtung are famous cities of Shan state. Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State.
